Interlude In G Minor

Posted on Fri Feb 1st, 2019 @ 9:38pm by Commander Temerant Bast

Mission: Reactivation
Location: Deck 4
Timeline: MD6 - 1430 Hours

The main transporter room was coming together nicely. The transporter pads were in place, the pattern buffers were being realigned, and the phase transition coils were being put together. Engineers had been working round the clock trying to put the ship back together and ready to return to duty as soon as possible.

Bast walked out of Transporter Room One, and was getting ready to head to the Security complex across the corridor on Deck 4, when he overheard a piece of music that was extremely familiar coming from a room farther down the corridor.

He slowly walked to the open door to one of the empty crew quarters. A junior engineer from Providence Fleet Yard was there, getting the room ready for its occupant. The young woman was arranging the furniture according to the layout plan displayed on a data PaDD she had set down on the table. She had shoulder-length brown hair, and her knuckles were bruised from all the manual work she'd been doing. She had cast a piece of music over the room's speakers while she worked.

She finished hanging a picture on the wall leading to the bedroom and turned around to see him standing in the doorway, and let out a surprised yelp.

"Sorry to startle you," said Bast. "I heard the music, I was just curious."

"Sorry Sir," said the young woman. "I'll turn it down if it bothers you."

"No, not at all," replied Bast. "It's just… It's been a while since I heard that piece, is all."

"You know it? Few people are fans of Betazoid classical music."

"Oh yes," said Bast. "I had to play it at a reception for the Trill government… Some ministry, I can't remember which one, about 60 years ago."

She looked at him questioningly, the incomprehension clear in her face. Bast saw how young she was, and guessed she didn't know much about the Trill.

"My first Host," he explained. "She was a professional musician. The symbiont inside me carries all of her memories. I remember playing this piece of music for the Trill Prime Minister and the Betazoid, Bajoran and Andorian Ambassadors around sixty years ago. Karellan's Fifth, Interlude in G Minor. Very emotional piece."

"That's right," said the young Ensign, a smile appearing on her face. "Do you still play?"

Bast chuckled. "I might have inherited all of Lamorra's memories, but sadly enough, none of her talent. No, I don't play. When it comes to music, these hands are all thumbs."

"That's actually… A bit sad, if you don't mind my saying," she said.

Bast waved her concern. "Don't worry about it, I'm sure I'll have a future Host that's musically competent at some point. But don't let me keep you, I'm sure Commander Hudson has you on a tight schedule."

The young Ensign turned back to her work. "I'll try to keep the music down," she said in apology.

"Please don't," called out Bast over his shoulder as he headed back toward the security complex.
