Homecoming

Posted on Thu Jan 24th, 2019 @ 10:06pm by Lieutenant Commander Temerant Bast

Mission: Reactivation
Location: Providence Station
Timeline: MD1 - 0930 Hours

Bast pressed his finger to the door controls and opened the door to his quarters on Providence Station. This was a room he thought he'd never see again, not so long ago - probably around Day Eight of his time isolated on the Sentinel. At the time, he'd come to see the ship as a prison from which he might never escape. But now, it seemed to be his salvation.

He'd been honest in his statements to Commander McCullen. The daily routine of his job on the station had helped in his recovery, but now it was time to get back into action, into the thick of things.

"There you are," said a female voice behind him.

He turned to see Kayla coming down the corridor. The science officer walked up to him and wrapped her arms around him. "I heard you'd come back. I was worried I might never see you again."

Before he had a chance to speak, she placed her hand behind his head and pulled him in for a kiss, but before their lips could touch, she sensed his resistance.

"What's wrong?" she asked. "Are you all right?"

"I'm fine," he replied, pulling away from her. "I've just... I've been through a lot."

She nodded, concern in her deep brown eyes. "I can imagine. Ten days alone on that ghost ship, surrounded by Orion pirates... Must have been hell."

Temerant took her hand and led her into his quarters, letting the door close behind them. "I managed to stay ahead of them," he said. "But now Commander MCCullen has asked me to join the crew of the Sentinel. As First Officer."

Her hand tensed in his. "I see," she said simply. She pulled her hand free. "And you said yes."

He was silent for a second. "It's where I belong. Out there. I came here to heal, now it's time to move on."

"What about me?" she said.

"Come on," he countered. "We've been together for two months. This is..."

"Don't you dare say it!" she snapped, fire in her eyes.

"This was a good frak, nothing more," he said. Part of him believed it was the truth, but another part recognized that there had been the potential for more.

He felt the sting of the slap before he heard the sound. By the time the pain registered in his brain, the door had already closed behind her.

He placed the last of his clothes inside the suitcase and looked around the empty quarters. After a shower and a good meal, he hadn't had much to pack - most of his personal belongings had been lost with his previous ship, and since then he'd learned to travel light. The console in his quarters beeped, and a light started blinking, indicating that a message had been received. He opened the message to read what he'd been expecting - his transfer orders to the USS Sentinel, as Executive Officer, effective immediately. The order was signed by Admiral McCullen.

He opened a second suitcase and packed a supply of ten days' worth of field rations. His plan was to move to the Sentinel permanently. Now that the ship had an industrial replicator installed on board, he would be able to at least replicate a bunk and some basic furniture for his quarters, and oversee the refit directly on board.

The comm came to life as he finished packing the second suitcase.

=/\= "McCullen to Bast, meet me in Providence's officer's mess."

He tapped his commbadge. "On my way," he said.
